Clive is a city in Dallas and Polk counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 18,601. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clive is known for its Greenbelt Park and trail system running through the community.

Clive serves as the axis of the western Des Moines suburbs, between Urbandale, Waukee and West Des Moines along the major transportation corridors of I-35, I-80 and I-235. The City of Urbandale is to the north to northwest, the City of West Des Moines is to the southeast to southwest, the City of Waukee in Dallas County is to the west.

History of Clive IA

Clive was settled in 1882, but did not incorporate until August 18, 1956. People believe the city’s name comes from Robert Clive, although the exact origin of the city’s name is unknown.

In the beginning, Clive was a coal mining town and a railroad shipping point along the St. Louis – Des Moines Northern Railway. The railroad depot, which dates back from 1882, has been restored while the neighboring Swanson House, dating back from 1911. The building now serves as the headquarters for the Clive Historical Society.

After its incorporation in 1956, Clive has served as a mostly residential suburb of Des Moines. The city has grown both in land area and population since that time. The majority of Clive’s businesses are along 86th Street, Hickman Road and University Avenue.

Clive Greenbelt trail

Possibly the most popular of all the things to do in Clive IA is the Clive Greenbelt Trail. Put on your walking shoes, grab your friends, and stroll down this scenic trail in the heart of Clive. This 11.3-mile trail forms part of the central Iowa trails network through twists and turns along Walnut Creek. When hopping on this trail you have the choice of heading west toward the Heart of Warrior Trail and the Raccoon River Valley Trail, or east toward Waukee, Windsor Heights, Des Moines, and many other metro cities.

The thick trees lining the path allow trail-goers to enjoy the peace of nature while offering the convenience of taking breaks at popular restaurants, stores, parks, and even the public library. And trail tidbit: make sure to hit the trail between May and September to see the Art Along the Trail exhibit. The installation features six sculptures crafted by local artists. At the end of the exhibition, one of the works is selected as a permanent sculpture in the city’s public collection!
